Stones Laid Down

Cemetery Desecrated By Local Council

Newcastle Cemetery Action Group was formed as a response to the local borough council of Newcastle under Lyme's, (Staffordshire, England) actions in carrying out what it termed as a "safety survey" of memorial stones during February of 1998.

The "survey" took place without any warning or prior consultation with any of the affected bereaved families, and consequently, gave no opportunity to those people to question whether or not the stones, some which had been standing for less than 3 years, were in a safe condition prior to the "survey"

Newcastle Cemetery Action Group began following a legal course of action to force the Council to repair the damage at their own cost and complained to the Local Government Ombudsman who has now published his report. This report can be viewed by following the link below. The Ombudsman found in the Action Groups favour and as a result of this the group is now in the process of winding down and held their last meeting on Wednesday 20th October 1999. We appreciate all the help and support that has been given during our campaign and a substantial amount of money was raised for which the group now has no need, this money has been donated to a number of worthy causes, details are available by following the link below.
