During an on-site recording of an interview for BBC Radio 4's 'You and Yours' programme on Wednesday 18th March 1998 between Alan Conroy, Chairman of Newcastle Cemetery Action Group and Mark Bolton, President of the National Association of Monumental Masons (NAMM), The gravestone pictured on the left was discussed.

Mr Mark Bolton, speaking
in his professional capacity, stated that, in his opinion, excessive
force had been used to lay the stone down and was shocked that this
could have occured.
It does not take an expert, however, to look at the photographic evidence to the left and to come to the conclusion that something very wrong has happened. |

As can be seen from the photographs, the gravestone has been severely damaged and the metal dowels have been bent over, one can only imagine the force which was necessary to push this stone over and yet the test which it supposedly underwent was a 'fingertip test' in which light pressure is applied by one person.

The family to whom this grave belongs have not yet been been contacted and are probably living out of the immediate area, and yet if they do not contact the Borough Council by the April deadline then this stone will be buried where it stands by the council.
